Short answers to the questions we hear most about Baselines for Confluence Cloud.

General

What is a baseline, a document and a version?

A baseline is what a freeze stores: which version of each page and attachment a set of pages held at a moment. The new view groups baselines of the same pages into a document, and each baseline is one version of it, with a label such as v1.0. See Documents & versions.

Does freezing change my pages?

No. Freezing, viewing, comparing and exporting never change your pages. The only action that writes to Confluence is Republish, and it creates a new page rather than editing the original.

Does Baselines keep a copy of my pages?

No. A version stores pointers to page versions in Confluence, not copies. Content is read from Confluence, as you, when you compare, export or republish. See Security & data residency.

Are attachments included?

When the scope says so: With attachments takes the attachments right under each root page, and With everything under it takes every page and attachment under it. This page only takes the page alone.

Are folders, whiteboards, databases and Smart Links included?

Yes. A version keeps the whole page hierarchy: folders, whiteboards, databases and Smart Links stay in their place, with the pages under them, each with its own icon. Comparing two versions counts them apart from the pages, as in Besides the pages: 1 folder added. PDF export and Republish take the pages and attachments only.

Where did Create Baseline, Retake and Import go?

Create Baseline is Freeze, Retake is Freeze new version on a document (or picking it on the Freeze screen), and Import is Republish. The classic view still has the old names: Classic view in the bar.

Using Baselines

What became of Current and Historical?

Freeze takes the pages as of now. Use an earlier date on the Freeze screen freezes them as they were at a date and time you pick. See Freeze.

Two of my baselines are one document, or one document is split in two. Why?

Baselines groups baselines by their root pages and the pages they share. If it got one wrong, Move a version to another document from the More menu. See Correct a document.

Why must a version label be a number?

The label is stored in the baseline’s name and read back from it, so it must be one the name reads back as a version, such as v2.4.

Can freezes run automatically?

Yes. A schedule freezes a document daily, weekly or monthly at a time you choose, and can skip the run when nothing changed.

How do I see what changed between two versions?

Use Compare: it counts added, removed and changed pages and marks the words that changed in each page.

Is Released an electronic signature?

No. It is a status on the release, kept with who set it and when. See Release status.

Can I still use the classic list?

Yes. Classic view in the bar switches, and Baselines remembers your choice. See Classic view & tours.

Export & restore

What does a PDF export include?

A cover with the version’s identity, a table of contents, every captured page in tree order and a manifest of every captured version. Pages only makes the PDF without the cover and manifest. See Export PDF.

How do I recover a deleted or damaged page?

Open a version that holds it and use Republish to publish its content back into Confluence as a new page.

I deleted a version by mistake.

Put it back from Deleted within 30 days.
